THE CÍES ISLANDS
The archipelago of the Cies Islands is made up of three main islands: the North Island or Monte Agudo, the Island of Monte Faro , or Centre Island and the South Island of San Martiño, along with other smaller islands. The total surface area of this protected natural park is more than 3000 ha. of which more than 400 correspond to dry land .
This archipelago, which is located at the mouth of Vigo 's Ria, 15 kilometres from the city, was declared a Coastal-Land National Park of the Galician Atlantic Islands in 2002.
The Cíes earned themselves the name of “ Islands of the Gods” in the past. And it is no surprise that they captivated all who visited them. A warm climate and low annual rainfalls (approximately half of that of Vigo ) make them a paradise in the Atlantic .
These islands are not inhabited, which helps them to maintain their natural beauty. You can go walking on indicated routes through their woods and mountains with visits to ornithological observatories, coastal lighthouses, archaeological remains, indescribably beautiful view points and nine beaches with fine white sand and crystal clear waters, one of which is reserved for nudists, and several lost coves.
